Local Secret

The Aruba sunset nobody tells you about

Everyone watches from their hotel balcony. Locals have a better seat — and it's completely free.

Here's the thing about Aruba sunsets: they're the best free show on the island — and almost everyone watches from the wrong spot.

The locals' seat: California Lighthouse

Drive about 10 minutes north of Palm Beach to the California Lighthouse, just before golden hour. The whole west coast lights up, the wind drops, and the crowds are somewhere else. No reservation, no cover — just you, the high ground, and the Caribbean going gold.

Prefer a drink in hand?

The little pier bars on Palm Beach — Bugaloe and Pinchos — put you right out over the water. Order a Balashi (the local beer), and time it for 6:15pm.

The one rule

Be in position 20 minutes early. Aruba sunsets don't wait — the sky does its best work in the ten minutes before the sun actually drops.

Best spot: California Lighthouse — ~10 min north of Palm Beach
Be in position by ~6:15pm (arrive 20 min early)
Free — no reservation, no cover
Drink in hand? Bugaloe or Pinchos on the Palm Beach pier
The verdict: the best thing you'll do in Aruba that costs nothing.
